Uncanny Nightlights

Uncanny Nightlights is a series made to overturn what we typically think of when we think of nightlights: benign, unobtrusive, just a tool. Each of the three lamps uses a thematically-colored LED and is based on different unsettling theme. The Derma lamp, made of silicone mixed with pigment with black wire for hair, feels like human skin. The Necro lamp was inspired by death and as such was made out of wood and painted with “rot.” The Spore lamp, made to emulate mold and invoke unease through trypophobia, was painted thermoplastic and foam.

Spore began as a shell made of thermoplastic vacuum formed over a rounded form. Holes were drilled and ear plugs were glued to the exterior to give it the spore-y look

The form used to create the shell for Spore was the rounded hemisphere of wood used in the Necro model. The flat bottom of the hemisphere was cut into using a drill press and Forstner bit to make a hole for the resin and LED

Finishing touches on spore - small neon green dots of paint were applied to the "rot" on Necro using a small tip
